OS: Windows server 2003 r2 st
CPU/Ram: 3.0 GB
Product: Microsoft / PE 2950
Comment:

My Windows Server 2003 R2 Standard is/has the following, DC/DNS/DHCP server and has Mcaffe Firewall/AntiVirus.

My Windows Server 2000 Sp4 (on the domain) is/has the following:

shared external hard drive: \\server2\ABCFolder

I am having connection problems to this shared drive from ONLY my 'workgroup' computers. Users on the domain don't have a problem connecting. When I disable Mcaffe firewall, everything is fine. It seems that my Windows Server 2000 cannot authenticate or get the credentials from the DC on my Win2k3 server.

Ports opened so far on Mcaffe Firewall:

80 (TCP) HTTP
443 HTTPS
135 (TCP,UDP) RPC
3389 (TCP) TS, RDP
123 (UDP) NTP
137-139 (UPD,TCP) Windows File Sharing
389 (UDP,TCP) LDAP
445 (UPD, TCP) Microsoft Directory Server
6514-6515 Mcafee Rumor-OU,OT,IU,IT AntiVirus Compliance Port
6516 Mcafee ASI-OU,ASI-IU AntiVirus Compliance Port

What is the exact error message? Is the external drive mapped to the workgroup computers with a shortcut on the desktop?

actually there is no error msg., I can't get past the credential window, I'd enter in username and password but window would just remain there. On the eventvwr on the windows server 2000 computer and I'm getting alot of Failure Audits Event Id: 537.

it does have a shortcut location on the desktop however it is not mapped. there are no saved or persistent credentials. I would like people to log in with domain credentials when they first try to connect to this drive.

Read all the comments on event IP 537.

Secondly, how can they login with domain credentials if the computers and users are on a workgroup and don't belong to the domain?

I am connecting to a shared drive, u don't have to belong to the domain, as long as u provide credentials u will be ok, have u tried something else I am unaware of where u can't log onto the domain from a workgroup? u may be thinking of when you first logon to windows. I'm talking about when ur already logged in and try to connect to a shared drive.

Let's try something. Open my computer on one of the workgroup computers. Click tools, map network drive. Browse for the share in question and map the drive.

thanks for ur help guapo, I think I found the problem. There are three radio button settings in Mcaffe Firewall that u can choose:

1) Any Computer
2) My network (the subnet only)
3) Specific address range

I choose 'Specific address range' and put in 192.168.1.1 - 192.168.1.254 instead and it worked.

I had it set on 'My network (the subnet only)' and I'm not sure why that would not make the workgroup computers (that are on the same ip address scheme) work. Any ideas?

Off the top of my head, 'My network only' could have something to do with Active Directory entries.

Are domain PCs and workgroup PCs all served by DHCP?

At least we have the answer for future reference.

Then my guess is that it was decided by AD.
