Hey All,

Here's my situation.

I was recently handed an exchange server that is currently in a funk (for lack of a better term). It is Exchange 2003.

Apparently, it has been receiving the following errors since it was put online. these errors only occur when the "scheduled maintenance" runs or a windows backup is attempted:

Event Type: Error
Event Source: ESE
Event Category: General
Event ID: 481
Date: 7/1/2007
Time: 12:04:18 AM
User: N/A
Computer: ########
Description:
Information Store (4972) First Storage Group: An attempt to read from the file "C:\Program Files\Exchsrvr\MDBDATA\priv1.edb" at offset 57883140096 (0x0000000d7a1aa000) for 4096 (0x00001000) bytes failed after 35 seconds with system error 1117 (0x0000045d): "The request could not be performed because of an I/O device error. ". The read operation will fail with error -1022 (0xfffffc02). If this error persists then the file may be damaged and may need to be restored from a previous backup.

Event Type: Warning

Event Category: Online Defragmentation
Event ID: 705

Description:
Information Store (4972) First Storage Group: Online defragmentation of database 'C:\Program Files\Exchsrvr\MDBDATA\priv1.edb' terminated prematurely after encountering unexpected error -1022. The next time online defragmentation is started on this database, it will resume from the point of interruption.

Up until a few months ago, this server was being backed up with Backup Exec 9. Maintenance would not go through, but the schedule backups would complete. Now, however, the back up does not go through. Therefore, we have built up over 50 gigs of transaction logs.

In an attempt to try and diagnose the problem (or fix it), i tried moving one of our larger mailboxes into a brand new storage group and mailbox store. Unfortunately, maintenance still doesn't complete. When i created the new store, i had it's logs point to a different location to try and save hard disk space. this is the error we receive on the new store when the maintenance runs:

Event Type: Error
Event Source: ESE
Event Category: Database Page Cache
Event ID: 476
Date: 6/30/2007
Time: 8:00:40 PM
User: N/A
Computer: MXSERV
Description:
Information Store (4972) QHP: The database page read from the file "C:\Program Files\Exchsrvr\QHP\Administration.edb" at offset 446472192 (0x000000001a9ca000) (database page 109001 (0x1A9C9)) for 4096 (0x00001000) bytes failed verification because it contains no page data. The read operation will fail with error -1019 (0xfffffc05). If this condition persists then please restore the database from a previous backup. This problem is likely due to faulty hardware. Please contact your hardware vendor for further assistance diagnosing the problem.

The backups of the new store go through just fine, and the logs for it clear without a problem. The maintenance still errors out though.

This weekend, i took the new store offline and tried to run an offline defrag as a test, as i have never had to do this procedure before. I thought if it worked, i could try it on the old store and see if it helped at all. Unfortunately, it ran for about a minute then errored out stating something to the effect of "operation has stopped, -1019 <errPageNotInitialized> blank database page".

I have a feeling exchange is going to fail very soon, and we don't have any good backups to revert to (overwritten...).

I know how to clear the logs out safely (if the database in a clean shutdown state), and i will be doing that this weekend. Any ideas on getting teh maintenance to complete?

Oh, the really bad news is that limits have not been put in place. The original database size is currently 128 gb. We have users who have 16 gb for a mailbox. I know this is a contributing factor, and we will be addressing it.

thanks for the help guys, i'm really in a bind!

Oh, one thing i forgot to mention. We receive about 10 of these errors at the same time that the maintenance fails to run:

Event Type: Error
Event Source: Disk
Event Category: None
Event ID: 11
Date: 7/1/2007
Time: 8:48:31 PM
User: N/A
Computer: MXSERV
Description:
The driver detected a controller error on \Device\Harddisk0.

Usually about 10 of them in a row.

thanks
