Hi Seems loads of people are having loads of problems with lsass.exe. Mine is slightly different and hope that someone can help. I have the familiar boot loop reported on XP machines, but mine is on Windows 2003 Server. for no apparent reason every time I re-boot the server I get a system error "lsass.exe - System Error" " an invalid parameter has been passed to a service or function". the only option is to press OK or to close the dialogue box. In bothe scenarios the server re-boots and repeats the above. I have booted from CD and gone into recovery. Have run CHKDSK and it repaired an error but to no avail. I have booted from CD using ERD Commander 2003 and have disabled all services that have a path to lsass.exe. Again this yielded nothing for me. Same problem on re-boot. I have renamed the offending executable and recovered an early deleted version and that has not worked either. I have no been working on this problem for more than 48 hours (have had a few hours sleep in between) and am despereately running out of ideas. I really do not want to re-install Server2003 due to the large volumes of data etc. If anyone has any ideas or has come across this problem before, or knows anything about it, please please let me know. OH, and btw, I have manage through ERC Commander to run Symantecs Sasser removal tool. It didnt detect the sasser worm and the problems I am having are not really comparable. many thanks

there is a virus (i think the sasser virus) which affects lsass.exe and causes it to reboot. to stop the machine from rebooting when you get this message do the following:

goto startmenu and then run.

type shutdown -a

you have about 60secs to do it.

Then i would recommend that you do a virus scan, and then get a good firewall. Also keep your OS up to date with all of the patches which are associated with this problem. Check out the Microsoft site for more information.

Thanks for this

But as I say, its not the sasser virus. Have verified that. I am in a non-boot loop. Cannot even get the server to boot.
