I have my laptop using Win XP with a wireless connection connected to the internet(through a router). And the same laptop is connected with a RJ45 cable connected to a desktop with Win Server 2k3 installed. I was browsing the internet just fine(on the server) until I disconnected the RJ45 cable to connect another laptop to my original laptop(Win XP). When I re-connected the Win Server 2k3 RJ45 cable back I couldn't browse the internet anymore ? Somehow the IP changed to 169.254.xx.xx
so I changed it manually to 192.168.0.4 but I didn't enter a defualt gateway. What should I do to get my internet connection sharing back on the server?

Win XP laptop: Internet conn sharing enabled
Win Server 2k3: Active Directory
DNS
File Server
Remote Access/VPN server

You get a 169.x.x.x ip when you can't contact a dhcp server.

could you explain why, if you have a router, you don't have the server cabled directly to the router?

Are you the one that set the internet sharing up?
Server only have one nic?

The router is a wireless router for the home network. Not a cisco router.
Yes I set the internet connection sharing myself.
I staticly created IP addresses, now I can ping the Laptop to the server but not vice versa.
The server has only one nic card. Its a stand alone server just for home purposes to check Active directory. How can I set internet sharing back?
PS:I don't have DHCP set on Server.
But I have a domain setup which works fine with the laptop in file sharing & log on.

start by putting the gateway entry in. No gateway means don't go beyond the local subnet. Gateway would be your laptop nic that connects to the server.

Thanks for your reply, but there is no gateway ip addr in the local NIC? (there is only 192.168.0.1 & subnet).
Should I manually configure the defualt gateway ? And what should it be? The wi-fi card on my laptop high speed internet card connection gateway is (192.168.2.1).

since you assigned 192.168.0.4 I have to assume the nic in the laptop its connected to is 192.168.0.?

put that ip in as gateway

Wanderer + to all replied to my message. I want to hug you all!!!!!! It worked! There was no defualt gateway in my laptop, so I just gave the laptops ip addr as the gateway on the server. Wow, it worked there & then. You learn something new everyday. These forums are just amazingggggggggg!!!!!!!!!
