I have a server question (2003 SP1)and was hoping that one of your skilled experts might be able to answer. The other day I noticed that one of my shared drives was showing duplicate folders but there was no corresponding increase in the drive space used. I could open each duplicate folder (read, write, etc) but if I renamed the folder I could not open the duplicate any longer but I did not want to (nor did I) delete the duplicate. I went through some normal disk cleanup and the system asked if I wanted to archive files over 50 days old. I did not see a problem with it so I did. Afterwards, I wound up with half the data gone and the name of the files that had been archived depicted in blue with the letters AC in the attribute field. In the mean time I still had the duplicate folders so I did a chkdsk to determine if I had a problem with the drives. Chkdsk found and fixed multiple problems and now everything appears normal with the exception of a bunch of blue file names with the AC attribute and 0 KB for size. My question is how do I recover the files that disk cleanup archived or chkdsk fixed?

where is your backup?

"system asked if I wanted to archive files over 50 days old"

Only place I have ever seen a message like that is in Outlook.

There is no file archive program in server. Do you have a file archive 3rd party program installed?

Sounds like you were renaming folders that were being published via Active Directory. This would explain the behaviour you describe concerning the rename and then no access.

Imagine the power of knowing how to internet search
