I have a problem with my server. When I press CAD to enter my logon credentials it takes a lifetime to come up with the window to enter my username and pass. This server is also setup as a terminal server so connecting to it via RDP is also painfully slow. Once the window has come up and you enter your user/pass then its back to normal speed, its just getting there in the first place that takes so long. Any ideas on what to check?

usual reason for long logon times is misconfigured dns. look at your dns settings.
Is the ms dns server first listed or is the isps dns server listed on the workstation tcp/ip properties?

the first dns server is that of itself (its the DC and Term server). I have seen long logons due to DNS AFTER you put in your user/pass and hit enter but not just getting to the user/pass screen.

Imagine i start a remote desktop to the server, the remote desktop top bar (the yellow one) appears along with a blank grey screen. It stays that way for 2 minutes or so and then the press CAD screen comes up, you press CAD and after 10 seconds or so the user/pass window appears. If i start typing, the letters appear one by one very slowly, but as soon as its entered and i click log on it instantly goes back to full speed.

Any ideas?

For more info,

The server is running a simple mirror raid on 2 x 160GB Sata Discs.

It has a tandberg RDX quikstor backup drive that is also SATA.

I answered the question, the first dns server is that of the ms dns.

"the first dns server is that of itself (its the DC and Term server)."

Your response:
the first dns server is that of itself

Appears you are talking the server and I am talking workstation.

Confirm the workstations first dns entry is that of the DC
Confirm your DNS server has the ISPs dns servers listed in the Forwarders Tab
Confirm your DNs server has a host and ptr record for every workstation in the forward lookup zone.
