i've got several pc's running 2k3 - so i'm quite used to it's behaviour, etc - just a strange one tonight - formatted and installed, completely basic and usual - first thing i did was install the modem then msn messenger. i have always gona by this method. But today, msn won't connect - the web version will - but not the standard application version. when i checked the service status, it was all go. just wondered if anyone knew what was going on - i couldn't count how many times i've installed 2k3, first time i've had this kind of issue

we aren't even at firewall stages yet.

thanks as always.

ok then guys - sorry to reply to my own question; but - system date and time was wrong - we were in sep 2002. changed in to current GMT, then signed in no problem. I have absolutely no clue why it was an issue, but there we go.

Quite simple why. Good authentication mechanisms have time components in them. Prevents against replay attacks, using expired tokens, etc.
