When trying to add a Windows XP computer to A new Windows server 2003 domain I receive the following error message.

*****************************************************

Note: This information is intended for a network administrator. If you are not your network's administrator, notify the administrator that you received this information, which has been recorded in the file C:\WINDOWS\debug\dcdiag.txt.

DNS was successfully queried for the service location (SRV) resource record used to locate a domain controller for domain StructuralStatics.co.uk:

The query was for the SRV record for _ldap._tcp.dc._msdcs.StructuralStatics.co.uk

The following domain controllers were identified by the query:

structur-re5k91.structuralstatics.co.uk

Common causes of this error include:

- Host (A) records that map the name of the domain controller to its IP addresses are missing or contain incorrect addresses.

- Domain controllers registered in DNS are not connected to the network or are not running.

For information about correcting this problem, click Help.

***************************************************

I have previously had this computer on the domain but I had to leave it due to some DNS firewall related issues, however this problem is not isolated to this computer as other computers that have not been previously added to the domain con not join and produce the same error

any help would be gratefully received

Did you do as the errors suggested? Like check you A records for the DNS server and DC? Is that the name of your DC structur-re5k91?

DNS firewall issues? Sounds like DNS is not correct.

I have now rechecked the DNS entries:

There is as DNS NS record pointing to structur-re5k91.structuralstatics.co.uk with the associated ip addresses 192.168.1.180 and 192.168.1.181 (the server has two Ethernet ports with these addresses)

There is also a DNS SOA record with the serial number 305 and the primary server structur-re5k91.structuralstatics.co.uk

Followed by A DNS Host(A) entry pointing to structur-re5k91.structuralstatics.co.uk with the ip address of 192.168.1.180

Finally there is A DNS Host(A) entry pointing to structur-re5k91.structuralstatics.co.uk with the ip address of 192.168.1.180

The DC is also functioning as the DNS Server

any further advice would be appreciated

I had similar issue before. I have succeeded by join to work group and then restarted and tried joining to domain. It was working fine.

You can try joining to work group and then restart--try joining to domain.
