Hello,
I have a new server her ethat was basically dropped off. I have no formal training with it and have only been exposed to workgroups in XP.
I had a watchguard Firebox Edge for connecting into our modem and eventually for use with a VPN. I have had nothing but trouble with the internet being up and down. I replaced that Firebox with a Linksys router, and the internet is better and seems to stay up, but it does drop off from time to time. When it drops off, I've noticed I can't ping it. Then it will all of a sudden be back on line and the internet works again.... I've also heard the server beep before when the internet connection went down, but no error messages are shown.

First things first...check the cat5 cables. Replace them with known good ones...and go from there. You could have a pinched wire or something inside the shielding...or a bad cat5 end.....test the new cables with an extended ping.
Ping 192.168.1.1 -t
