Im a newbie..
I just created a domain controller on my network. I have 2 workstations with xp pro.
I created the DNS on the domain controller and setup the DC to be the DNS server for the workstations. I set the workstations to static ip and dns, and entered the IP of the DC as the DNS server. I added the workstation to the domain. logged in with an account I created in AD. When i logged in it went right on. It took 3 mins at "Applying personal settings" (Seems to long for a local profile.) and then I was in. Now here is the weird part. I shut down the domain controller, which I told you is the DNS server as well. I CAN STILL LOG INTO THE DOMAIN WITHOUT THE DOMAIN CONTROLLER EVEN BEING ON! I can log in with the user i created in AD. HOW THE HELL CAN THIS BE SOMETHING IS WRONG HERE. Please someone help me. I am going insane. I dont get it, its not possible. I have the dns on the workstation set to the Domain controller, and it still logs me in and fast too. Makes no sense. god why me.

"I dont get it, its not possible." Of course it is, and nothing is wrong. Your login for that account has been cached and stored locally. This is completely normal behavior. heropsycho is pointing you in the right direction.

I'd also recommend you purchase a book on 2003 Server.

Once you logged in when the DC is up and running your login information will be stored in cache. So if u shutdown the server also u can login from the information stored in cache of workstation. Once you restart your workstation and try logging in
