Hello,
I'm a newbie using server O.S. and I need help setting up Win 2K3 server. I want to have all my home computers to be control by the domain server in every way and I don't know how to do it. I have a dynamic connection, Belkin wireless router, one NIC on the server where Win 2K3 is installed(Do I need another on isntalled?), one wire workstation and 2 wireless workstaion(one of them is a Laptop)and a stand alone wireless Netgear print server.
What is the first thing I should do to make the server to run as a server after the O.S. is installed and updated?
How do I get all these devices mentioned above to work in harmony? How do I make the server to run as DHCP, to assign IP to the workstaion, to apply group/user/internet and security policies? How the Domain is created on the server and how to make the workstation to join the domain? How do I make the workstation and the server to see each other?
And the las question for now is what NOT to do or allow on the server for security?

Please, forgive me for all these question but
I really appreciate your help.

Thank You!
mainframe

These should give you a good start:

Look around the sites a bit first BEFORE you do anything to see if it's what you actually want.

Always post back so we know how you did, or if I gave you some bad advice.

Also, don't ask for the moon. Ask a question. I could write 4 pages answering this post alone. Makes me not want to answer it because for one, it would take too long, and also, no offense, but it doesn't look like you've actually tried to find the answers to anything yet.

Hello,

I would like to start with a thank you. I took your advice and after I did some research, I did try to installe the Domain Controller and I get the following error:

Diagnostic Failed

Warning: Domian Contreller funcitions like joining a domain, logging onto a domain, and Active Directory replication will not be available until the DNS infrastructure for Active Directory is correctly configured.

The Wizard encountered an error while trying to determine if the DNS server with which this domain
controller will register supports dynamic updates.

Details

The primary DNS server tested was: ns1.dnsexitl.com{63.223.76.173}

The zone was: mymainframeserver.com

The test for dynamic DNS update support returned:
"DNS bad key."
(error code 0x00002339 RCODE_BADKEY)

First I did using the dns from dnsexit.com (dynamic) and even the following dns:

From Router:
Static ip: 69.255.124.254
Default gateway: 69.255.120.1
subnet mask:255.255.248.0
local ip: 192.168.1.1
server ip: 192.168.1.101
gateway: 192.168.1.1

So, I don't know what I'm doing wrong.

Thanks.

Dude, go buy a book on Windows 2003. Seriously, you do not have the foggiest idea what you're doing, and no offense, but I don't want to write a novel to get you going right.
