Hello,
To setup websites on IIS 6.0 I did as follows:1. Create a Forward lookup DNS zone xyz.com
a) Create an A record (Same as parent), so it will be pointing to xyz.com
b) Create an Alias (CNAME) www, so it will be pointing to www.xyz.com2. Register a domain xyz.com through a service provider and NS point to the server's IP (193.x.x.x).
3. Create a website with host header value i.e. xyz.com, www.xyz.com
If second step is missing and in my network connection settings, I specify 193.x.x.x my Primary and only DNS server, will it work?
Assume no firewall installed, nothing is blocked at present.
The Name resolution is not working from a remote machine, on the server itself, it works fine.
Server Configuration
OS: Windows SBS 2003 SP2
Web Server: IIS 6.0
It is a Domain Controller
It has one public IPRegards

I don't know what are you exactly trying to find out, but! One thing i know that you can't get a domain out of your machine. Your web site's address is going to be your ip. But i didn't exactly understand what you ment. And tell me if you did the port forwarding and i saw that your firewall is desabled.

Okay, let me reconstruct it:
I want to setup multiple websites (name based virtual hosting) with one IP on my server:
Server Configuration
OS: Windows SBS 2003 SP2
Web Server: IIS 6.0
It is a Domain Controller
It has one public IP
1. Get the DNS Server registered and then this can be set as DNS server of the domain names. Can it be the webserver machine itself?2. Create a Forward lookup DNS zone xyz.com
a) Create an A record (Same as parent), so it will be pointing to xyz.com
b) Create an Alias (CNAME) www3. Register a domain xyz.com through a service provider and NS point to the server's IP or FQDN.
4. Create a website with host header value i.e. xyz.com
Question 1. Please tell me if this is the way I can host websites on my own server?
Question 2. If first and second steps are missing and in my network connection settings (my workstation, a windows XP machine), I specify x.x.x.x my Primary and only DNS server, will it work? Assume no firewall installed, nothing is blocked at present. At present the name resolution is not working from a remote machine, on the server itself, it works fine.

1. OKay by what i read everything is done correctly.
2. Second question. Yes you can host more than one (www) server on your machine, but you can't host 2 in your situation right now. If you want to host more than one site you need more than 1 static Ip. That's the problem that i have right now setting my ftp servers.
I need more than one ftp server so i can host game servers. But i can't because i have one Public ip.
Now let me tell you how you can get more than one ip. Call to your Internet provider and ask them if you can buy static IP (s) (It's not free).
Now back to the first question. Are any steps missing? Probably, because you can't go to your web site. How to fix this? I would suggest you reinstall the OS again and try these steps again.
If you have any further questions, please ask..

Ok, I got the solution, there is no need to setup DNS.
Thanks to Ganesh who suggested this, the thread URL is: http://forums.iis.net/t/1154028.aspx
Thanks to a friend of mine also in PULSAR KNOWLEDGE CENTRE, he too suggested the same.
Suppose the website you want to point to your server is xyz.com, then in your domain control panel just change the "A" record, here enter the Public IP of your server.
Then create a website on your server with host header value i.e. xyz.com and www.xyz.com.
This way one can host any number of websites on a server with one IP.
