Its done by the firewall. apparently you forgot to secure your network!!! Never connect a server directly on a wan port. You should install a firewall between your wan router and your network.

On most corporate firewall, there is a tools named "one-to-one nat". Also, some firewall have a DMZ port (for servers using public IPs) and a LAN port (for LAN IPs)

Setup a VPN. Thats probably the safest.

Or if you dont care about people hacking into your system, share out whatever you need on that server. Make sure you have windows file and printer sharing setup. Outside of the LAN you can go to the run prompt and type in \\i.p address

If you use NAT, you have to use port forwarding feature. But i don't think it is available in Windows server itself. It is part of the Microsoft ISA server or other third party routing package.

With port forwarding, you will specify what LAN ip computer to contact when trafic is received on a specific tcp port (80=web, 25=mail... may be redirect to 192.168.0.3)

This is the way it should be done if you want to run an ftp or mail server on a workstation within the LAN. However, if you need to access your LAN from a branch office, VPN is the solution as said Greg.
