I'm sure it could support several thousands users (theoretically) but the question is what the performance would be. I think that's what you need to ask yourself. Memory is one of those things you can't have too much of.
If you want to support a lot of users I'd say a dedicated server is the way to go. And, I'd look at a server system like HP ProLiant or such. It all depends on how much money you want to spend. You could build a server from a workstation with a Celeron CPU if you like, but it's gonna be slow. It's all up to your needs and your wallet.
