OS: Win 2K3 SP1
CPU/Ram: 3.2Ghz 2GB

Comment:

The domain I am now supporting had two domains on two controllers. domain1.com was on a win2k box and domain2.local is on a Win2K3 box. I tried to demote the Win2k box and remove the domain and trust, but I had to do a forced demotion (dcpromo /forceremoval). Now when I run gpupdate on any of the machines, including servers, it times out. All users can log in and everything appears to work, except I can't use gpupdate. All machines are XPsp2 and all servers are Win2k3 SP1.

Run dcdiag on the dc. Does it show any errors?

I think there is some magical place in active directory that needs cleaning, but I've only heard rumors of it and haven’t actually been there. Maybe a "metabase" or something?

I just did, but the remnants of that server do not exist. I also checked ADSI edit and everything was clean. Perhaps it's a conflict in the policies that are running. How do I check for failed polices? I think there is a log file somewhere. Any ideas?
