I have a HUGE favor to ask. Our server has a public IP address through a company called Qwest. Well, we've switched companies (yesterday).

I haven't switched any IP addresses and DNS stuff on the server yet. I need help doing that though.

Anyway, understand my problem? Please get back to me soon. Everyone in the office is a little disturbed with getting no emails.

Thanks for your time!

With a new ISP you will have new DNS and mail server addresses. If you are using your ISP for either of these services, you will need to change them on the server and any other computer that depends on them. You will have to get the correct addresses from your ISP.

Other than that - what "IP addresses and DNS stuff on the server" are you referring to?

We switched over to TeamWifi (www.teamwifi.net) and the tech guy said our new IP address would be 10.1.16.30. Do I need more than that IP address? Our modem had a static IP address before also.

What do I do from here? Is it possible to talk on the phone with you? You can call me at 1-800-837-3759 and just ask for Brenda. OK? Or do you not feel comfortable doing that?

If you want DNS to work, you will have to enter your new ISP's DNS server addresses in any computers (the server, e.g.) that depend on them.

If you want email to work, you will have to enter your new ISP's mail server addresses in any computers that depend on them for sending and receiving email.

I strongly suggest you call your ISP if you have questions about either of these. DNS and email are two of the most basic services provided by any ISP. They should be able to give you the information you need.

We run DNS on our server. I've heard that is bad, but don't know what to do to change that. Pretty much everything is setup on our server. Maybe we can just IM about it so I can get a little better understanding. Do you use IM at all? I would really appreciate that :) My MSN is brendalisalowe@hotmail.com

I still don't really understand what you are asking. What exactly doesn't work? Is it just email? "IP addresses and DNS stuff" is pretty vague. You need to describe exactly what isn't working if you want to get relevant advice.

>>We run DNS on our server. I've heard that is bad

This is not necessarily bad at all. Is DNS broken? If not, don't worry about it.

I may be available for IM after about 7pm PST tonight. I would prefer not to do that because, if for no other reason, whatever help I give you in IM will not be available to others as it would be if I gave it here. I will be monitoring this thread throughout the day, however, and will respond to you here.

Right now we are still using our old ISP until I can figure out how to switch the IP Address on the server. So everything is fine for now.

I'm worried about changing things on the server. I don't want to screw it up.

What all will I have to change on the server once we switch to the new ISP. We have two ISP right now, but I don't want to cancel the first one until I "know" what I am doing.

I understand not wanting to do the IM thing. Hopefully I can get this all figured out.

Thanks for your time.

That depends. You will have to change the addresses for any services, such as DNS or email, that your new ISP is providing you. So the question is, what services are they providing you? And, what services is your server providing to the outside world?

you might want to consider getting a consultant onsite if you are not familiar with DNS/Routing (if you have internet via LAN you will need to address this as well) what your gateway is going to be, the new subnet, etc...

Brenda you need to explain your setup.

For example proper configuration would have your intra-net with a private ip range which is not the range provided by qworst or the new isp. Your dhcp server would provide the ip addresses to the pcs. It would include your dns servers address and the internet or other gateway addresses. Your dns server would be setup to FORWARD to the isps dns server.

With this setup the only ip address you would have to change on dns is the ip address you are forwarding to. Remove qworst and put it the wifi dns address.

Question now is how is your dns configured.
