I am on the road a lot and sometimes need access to my home network to get files. SO i installe the IIS, and FTP service on my Win2003 Server machine. I also set the connections limits to 1 and set it so only I can login. What I need help with is logging on from outside. How do I get the WAN IP to login?
Also, since i'm fairly new at this is there anything else I need to setup? I can login without any problems when using a computer on my home network, so now I just need to test out from an outside comp. Thank you for your time.

you need a static tcp/ip address at home.
if you got cable/dsl router at home, you need forward ftp/http port to the w2k3 machine.

No you don't need a static IP. You just need to know your IP. Given, if it's dynamic, periodically, it will change.
You can find this info by typing "ipconfig /all" at the command prompt.
Also, you don't need to forward the http port. Just the ftp port which is 21. If you don't have a router, port forwarding is in the advanced section of the TCP / IP properties on the network adapter.
THE GAME...

Thank you both for your help but I am sitll having trouble. I logged into my router and forwarded ports 21 - 21 to my server at 192.168.0.100 from port 21 - 21
But this still did not help. I try to login by typing in my wan ip but it says it cannot connect. I can only connect to my server if I connect through its LAN IP of 192.168.0.100 but not the wan ip. Thanks for your help again.

both of the response that you have got are correct in theirown litte way,,,,
You might consider using the following programs ""Serv-U"" as a server for your home PC,,,, & smart FTP on you laptop so that you could logon to you computer,,,if you still have problems letme know and i give you screen shots on how to set themup and how to use them,,,
