ftp and database access stops every

Symptoms: Every few days, not regular I lose connection to SQL 2008 database from websites on server, and ftp access is stopped.
Reboot server and all works...
Can someone give me guidence as to where to start in troubleshooting. Be kind I am a user interface guy, not a Server/Network dude.

Are you checking the system events? (right click my computer>Manage>Event Viewer). A lot of time there will be a code for any services stopping. It would probably be under the application events, but possibly security. Check the codes on the internet.
