freeze when opening search window

i am a bit lost: when trying to launch a search on some directory, the search popup window is created, but if i try to enter some filename in the top left edit box the session (i m using remote desktop session) freezes ...
i must say that server looks unstable as well, probably linked.

Does it still happen if you change the drive in the look in box to anything other than the C drive?
Also, go to advanced search & uncheck search system folders. Does it still happen?

as soon as i click on the search window it freezes, so i cannot neither change the harddisk or the options,

Run msconfig, go to the startup tab & look for things that don't belong there. Uncheck anything else that you don't need to load at boot time which is almost all of it. Reboot & click Ok.
