Comment:

I got a problem with Windows XP Pro SP2.

I have configured the local computer to connect to our domain. My domain controller is Windows Server 2003.

I have set group policies on the Server, and I forgot to put in a local administrator password on the local computer. Now, I could not install anything nor use its ports.

In short, I'm trying to install a software to the computer in administrator mode, and could not do it because I'm not so familiar with the group policy that I set.

What I have done so far: (1) Boot to safe mode, and change the password of the administrator under computer management. (2) Open the registry, and edit the settings that says autologon and change it to '1' but could not edit it at all. (3) I'm asking your help since no website could offer what I need. I'm pretty confident about the forum expert answers.

What policy did you set? Did you document your steps while you were doing them?

If the computer is authenticating to the Domain, why do you want it to autologin to a Local Admin account?

Login to the computer with your Domain Admin account (which should already be in the Local Administrators Group), and install the software you need to install.

You can also change the Default Administrator userid and password while logged in with your Domain Admin account.

The policies that I set was only for "Interactive logon" sets under Security Settings of the Computer inside the GPME. Then, I could not connect anymore with the local administrator. 'Coz I did not set the password for it.

The main reason why I would like to Login with a local admin account is just to install some software on the Windows XP Pro computer.

I'm familiar with GPSI, but I'm not a master of it. Neither I am with Group Policies.

Also, I set "Limit local account use of blank passwords..." to enabled. I'm not sure if it affects the login of Administrator account without passwords.

Topic Question:
But, is there a way to retrieve, change, or reset the passwords of the local Admin once you get to connect to the Windows Server 2003 Domain with your Win XP Pro Computer? If there is none, Should I use GPSI, and set the Group Policy instead?

Connected Question:
In other words, what is the most advisable way to install something to the Win XP Pro computer once it is being authenticated with the Win Server 2003? ==> Is it to install with your Local Administrator account? or bypass the Local Administrator and use Windows Server 2003 tools (such as GPSI)?

No, I did not document my steps. If you could send me a forum link on "how to change the Default userid and password while logged in with your Domain Admin Account", I'd be glad.

login to Domain Controller as Domain Admin
and right click on my computer select - manage from meno, Computer Management windows will open and at top on open menu there will "Computer Management(Local)" right click on it and select -"connect to another computer". Browse or give direct IP Address for your desire system which's Local Admin password you want to set. I hope you will found your system's information here and select Local Users ang Groups and select Administrator finally reset that password.
