Folder path 'invalid character'

I have had folder redirection set up for a while now, using a GPO to redirect the My Documents and Desktop folders to my server's profile share. This works perfectly, apart from that when a user tries to install something (usually microsoft software, but also happens when installing the Java environment, for example), they receive a "The folder path "My Documents" contains an invalid character.
I have no idea why it is doing this, can anyone shed any light on this?
Little more info: The user that is installing the software is a local admin, and the folders are redirected to \\zeus\profiles$\%USERNAME%\Folder (could it be the $ sign?)

The $ may be the problem - as well as something in the user name. The following link has some good rules and suggestions for naming:

Well since I posted I've already tried making a new share called "profiles", that isn't hidden. This made no difference after redirecting the clients to the new share. This is getting annoying, I can't install office either. I know it works if I log on as a user without a redirected profile, but that just isn't practical.
Thanks for your reply,
Rob

Have you tried mapping a drive to that location?
