Files just dissapeared!!!!

Hello guys and gals, right, listen to this, i went into our data files and i wanted to check a folder of a particular client, so i right clicked the folder and selected properties (result, over 2gb). Well, i ok'd this and closed the window. Then my colleague goes into the same folder and nothing is in there? Anybody got any ideas? Im fretting as our last few backups have failed as well!! Any advice/help would be hugely appreciated!
