Hi,
I have just set up exchange server as an eval. to see how it goes. I have a small, 2 DC, approx. 8 user domain. I can send email internally and outwards, but when I try and send email in from an external address, I get a reply with the effect of "SMTP Error". The address I am sending to is rob@goldcs.co.uk and I have made the MX record point to mail.goldcs.co.uk (my IP) and forwarded port 25 to the exchange server. My internal domain is named golding.ttbb.net - will this make a difference as the message is addressed to rob@goldcs.co.uk and not rob@ttbb.net (which i DO NOT own). It was just a random domain name that I used before I purchased goldcs.co.uk.

Hope that made sense, I'll be glad if anyone could help,

Rob

You need to create a recipient policy for the name you have registered, and rebuild the recipient update service.

Also, somewhat unrelated, you should not have named your internal domain ttbb.net even if you did own it. It should have been ttbb.local or something like that, but neither here nor there.

Actually, now that I think about it, in this particular situation, you should edit the default Recipient Policy, changing the domain name in it to goldcs.co.uk. That way, you could email someone on ttbb.net should you ever need to.

Well I already made a new recipient policy, and set the SMTP to "@goldcs.co.uk", and now I'm getting replies to my email that say

"From:postmaster@golding.ttbb.net

This is an automatically generated Delivery Status Notification.

Delivery to the following recipients failed.

rob@goldcs.co.uk"

So thats actually from my exchange server, which is something.

PS. If I change the address of the user on the domain to (user)@goldcs.co.uk it works, but I don't want to have to do that for every user. What can I do with the recipient policies that can fix this?

Thanks for your reply,

Rob

You need to issue the rebuild command to your Recipient Update Service.
