I have a 2003 server running active directory with a shared printer.
i want the 'everyone' group to be able to print. this means ppl in other domains and ppl who are not in a domain at all
when i am logged in locally to an xp pro box, i can find the server when i search for it
instead of being able to click on it and look at the shared printers (they're for everyone) or folders for that matter when i click on it i am immediatly prompted for a username and password
i tried connecting to it through the command line and again it asked me for a user name/pass
any ideas?
basically i want 'everyone' on the lan to be able to browse to the printer, set it up, and print to it

Don't I wish it was that easy :-) and that we didn't need security in the world.
"i want the 'everyone' group to be able to print. this means ppl in other domains and ppl who are not in a domain at all"
Might want to review the subject of domain security. You can not set "everyone" from "everywhere" to print to your domain.
Anyone wanting to print requires a domain account. Start there and then move on to researching how to setup auto printer installations via technet or knowledge base at MS's web site.
Give a person a fish, they eat for a day. Suggest they internet search and they learn a skill for a lifetime.

you could enable the guest account on the server, rename it to "print", and leave password blank.
just tell unauthenticated users to enter ID Print if they want to connect to a printer.
Apart from that I second the posting of wanderer - Active Directory is really not intended for unauthenticated access.

Ditto what the guys say. You may want to set up web-based printing for your non-Domain users.

good answers. thanks. Right now I have them printing directly to the TCP/IP port instead of through the share on the domain.
this is something that i wanted to avoid because i need to install the drivers on each computer then set them up on the tcp/ip port
but...
sounds like i cant get them to print to domain shares if they dont have an AD account.
again...thanks for the advice

You don't have to install the drivers. They will automatically be downloaded when the user tries to print.
I have NOT lost my mind — I have it backed up on tape somewhere

You don't need to go to all that trouble. Set up web-based printing and the users can install whichever printers they want...

better yet... get a dedicated printer server. the
inexpensive netgear print sharing boxes cost about $40
-50. enterprise print servers like the HP Jetdirect boxes
cost $200 and up...
