Hi everyone,
I had the dual boot of win xp and win server 2003 without any problems. But when i re-installed win xp in the partition C, it overwrote the MBR so i can only boot with win xp but not win server 2k3.
I edited the file boot.ini, so now it is like:

[boot loader]
timeout=30
default=multi(0)disk(0)rdisk(0)partition(1)\WINDOWS
[operating systems]
multi(0)disk(0)rdisk(0)partition(1)\WINDOWS="Microsoft Windows XP Professional" /fastdetect
multi(0)disk(0)rdisk(0)partition(4)\WINDOWS="Windows Server 2003, Enterprise" /fastdetect

At the boot screen, i can choose 2 options to boot as normal. It works fine with win xp, but if i choose win server 2003, it will restart my computer. So i can not boot in win 2k3.
Please suggest me any ideas to fix this. Thanks a lot.

I know the NTLDR file is newer on 2003.
You can try to boot into the recovery console en try the following:
type C: en press enter.
give the following command ren NTLDR
oldntldr
Now insert the Windows Server 2003 CD-ROM into the CD-ROM drive.
Now go to your CD-ROM drive and type the following cd i386
Now type in te following command
copy ntldr C:\
When the file is copied give the command exit.
If you didn't install the recover console yust boot with XP CD-ROM en choose for repair\ manualy repair.
The NTLDR operating system loader installed with 2003 is backward compatible with XP.
The NTLDR operating system loader installed on XP is not compatible with 2003.

One guy told me to boot in the recovery console with the 2003 CD and try FITMBR and then FITBOOT but it does not work.
I had to repair my windows server 2003 but it took me much time to do so.
Maybe I will try your solution next time :)
Thanks.

I too had this problem. I originally had a Windows 2003 Server OS installed on my PC and used all my drive space in two partitions. I wanted to install Windows XP also and Dual Boot my machine. I wanted XP also on this machine in order to Play America's Army which would not install on a Windows 2003 Server. Also my Nvidia Video Driver would also not work on W2K3 Server. So I usd BootIT to resize my second partion in order to make room for my Windows XP OS install.
After resizing the second partition I now had space to install XP. I began to run through the install of XP and installed it to the Free space I created. After the Installation I now had both Windows XP and Windows 2003 Server, Standard as options to boot to from my boot loader menu. Booting to the new XP OS was fine but when I chose to boot to my Windows 2003 OS the "Loading" bar at the bottom of the black screen came up and filled in from left to right but stopped right there and hung. I tried many things to no avail. Then I read the reply to your message by royn and booted to XP and compared the file size on the 2003 partition to the Installation CD-ROM. The NTLDR file on the Windows 2003 partition was 212KB and it was 270KB on the Windows 2003 Server CD-ROM. I copied the file and replaced the one on the original 2003 partiion and whoalla both XP and 2003 now can boot. My thanks goes out to royn.

Peace

I cant seem to install XP with 2k3!. I have 2 HDS. Each with about 4 partitions. Xp was on HD1, 1st partition. When I tried to install Win2003 on 1st partition of HD2, everything went okay but the OS couldnt be loaded up. Anyways, now ive reformatted everything, installed W2k3 on 1st HD, 1st partition, n it works, but after I install XP on 1st partition of HD2, XP nor W2k3 loaded up. But after copying NTLDR from the W2k3 cd to the C:\, I can only load up W2k3. Xp still doesnt work. it states, <Windows root>\system32\ntoskrnl.exe missing or corrupt. Ive recopied the XP ntoskrnl from the cd to its folder, but still same error. Ive checked the boot.ini, everything is pointing in the right place. What am I overlooking???

"fixed" the problem, but not exactly the problem above. I installed Win2003 in the 2nd partition of the 1st HD, with Xp as the first partition, then copying the updated NTLDR and the NTDETECT.COM to the machine. Now that works, both OS works. Still cant figure out why it didnt work on the 2nd HD. I think because it was a old HD, probably requires a loader to detect the partitions and drives of the 2nd HD before the OS loads up. Other than that, in the OS, the 2nd HD works fine. I remember having an old pc with a software called OnTrack Disk Loader or something like that to load the partitions of the 2nd HD so that DOS would recognise it. Maybe that was the case. I dont know. Any replies?
