Hi, I have some queries-
I am running win 2003 server on disk0 having two partitions. I connect one another disk1 having three partitions as secondary. I boot my machine with disk0 that has 2003 server. After booting 2003 server is not assigning the drive letters to disk1. When I check it in disk management then there is no drive letters on disk1. Why 2003 server is not assigning drive letters like win XP and win Vista?
Now instead of assigning drive letters from disk management I take a different root ie open registry: HKLM->System->MountedDevice and manually create the \DosDevice\ entries there for Disk1 and restart the system. Then again there is no drive letters on disk1. But if I follow this procedure in XP or in Vista then I get the drive letters.
Someone please help me that without specifying the drive letters in DiskManagement how can I get these in some other way? Does 2003 server keeps the track of drive letters beside registry also?

Waiting for your suggestions
Thanks

Is there something about Disk Management you don't like?

Go into disk management and let the system write a signature to the disk. Then assign the partitions drive letters.

That is how the system is designed to be used.

Going to dosdevice in the registry is... not very smart. Great way to render your server nonbootable.

Hi there,
Thanks for replying.

--Is there something about Disk Management you don't like?

Actually the thing is that I am making one application to clone the entire hard drive.
In case of 2003Server- I make the clone disk by copying all the sectors of source disk(Disk0) to the dest disk(Disk1), when cloning process completed I need to boot the system once. Then if i boot the machine by Disk1 then it does not assigns the drive letters to its partitions beside C:\ only.
So I need to assign the drive letters after restarting the system by using its disk signature(of Disk1). As i think I can not do it by using DiskManagement, So I need to update registry only.

If you please give me some idea about that.

Thanks

Before you boot disk1 you should go into the bios and disable disk0. This will result in the cloned drive assigning drive letters correctly.

Not sure what you hope to accomplish with this clone procedure. In my opinion its a waste of time. You would be much better off mirroring the drives either by hardware [preferred] or via making the disks dynamic in disk management and mirroring them that way. Then you have fault tolerance. Your clone is not fault tolerant.
