Hi,
I need to downgrade a server running Server 2003 Enterprise Ed., but a pirated copy. My client has purchased a 5 user pack of Server 2003 Standard and wants to downgrade or revert back to the legal standard edition.

Can I just replace the key by re-activating the activation process or by running a soft repair on the OS without losing the shared drives, vpn settings, and a small active directory group? Whats best?

Thanks!

Might check this but I think you might be better off with a ntbackup and then clean install and then apply restore. Might be very complex if running many applications.

I'd make a backup with system state before I began any attempt.

"Best Practices", Event viewer, host file, perfmon, antivirus, anti-spyware, Live CD's, backups, are in my top 10

You can not downgrade except by a completely new install. All apps will have to be reinstalled. You can restore the data from backup. Just don't do a system state restore or you will be doing everything from scratch again.

Example of Oxymoron:

Person who is pro life and anti sex education.
Education is key to prevention. Prevent conception you prevent abortion.

Abstinence training clearly isn't working.
