Comment:

I have a system setup with the domain name MyProperty.com and users log on under the Domain MyProperty in 2003 SBS. No Email exchange server set up as yet.

Now my boss wants to change the company name to MyGroup.com and the Domain to MyGroup.
Is it quicker and easier just to reinstall the 2003 SBS from scratch with the new name or is there an easier way of doing so.

Thanks for any comments.

I was going to attempt something like this a week ago but decided to start from scratch because...MS states that if you're running Active Directory and wish to change the name of the domain, you would have to run their "rename tool" from another 2003 server which is a member of the existing domain. I thought it was going to be easy till i read the fine print. Check it out though, its the domain rename tool available from Microsoft.

Trust me, this is anything but easy. A domain rename is possible but if you read up on it, it is recommended only in the most extreme of circumstances. It is much more complicated than wanderer thinks. You have to rename the domain. Reconfigure DNS, visit each pc to give it the new domain information, etc, etc.

Depending on the size of your domain, you might be better off in the long run to start over. If you do need to rename, I would do so under the direction of MS tech support.

Thank you all. Think it's best if I start from scratch again..

Good choice, I have renamed a domain and it's not a pretty exercise!! Have you considered just changing your external Domain name and leaving your internal Domain name as it is?
