I am a noob, and i have this free trial of server 2003, so i installed ad, and i followed the instructions to install DNS. When i try and join the domain, it says, it can not be found. I have no idea how to troubleshoot the problem. If any of you guys have any suggestions that would be great!
what dns server is the workstation pointing to? The 2003 server or the ISP dns servers?

That leads me to another question. I have a router, and it has its own DNS ip, my server will connect Through the router.
So i will have to set the dns ip from my router, to the one on my server?

This all depends on what you plan to use your DNS server for. If it is going to be used strictly for name resolution for web content, then all you need to do is set the "Pointer" IP Addresses in the configuration on the server. This is where you would input the DNS IP Addresses provided to you by your ISP. Your internal LAN clients would then have the internal IP address of your Windows 2003 box as their DNS Server.
When a client on your local LAN attempts to browse a web page, the request will first be made to the local 2003 box, then the request will be redirected to the "external" DNS IP Addresses of your ISP. Once a name resolution comes back, it will be forwarded to your internal client.
You can also setup zones on an internal basis. For example, if you have nodes on your network with static IP addresses, e.g. printers, servers, access points, that you wish to be able to access via name rather than IP, you could create mappings for these devices.
For example:
printer.yourDomainName 192.168.1.5
server2.yourDomainName 192.168.1.6
accessPoint.yourDomainName 192.168.1.222And so on....

I believe the "pointer" SmittyZ3M is referring to is the forwarders tab [not to be confused with forward lookup zone]
Personnally I would not create zones for printers etc but would just create host and ptr records for them. They will resolve by name doing so.

do you have a domain? did you dcpromo the server? from the workstation can you ping the servers name?

Yes, i have installed dcpromo (start run dcpromo) NO, i can not ping the server name. I can ping the IP. I have also made sure that the workstations Defualt Gateway is the servers ip, also the DNS server is the server ip as well.
Still can not join the domain.

your dns is wrong, make sure the local server is the only dns server in all tcp-ip configs.
no outside dns servers should be listed on either clients or servers

we covered that is post 1 and 2. Your gateway is wrong though. It should be your router not the server unless you are using RRAS on the server with two nics.
If you can ping the server but not by name you don't have a host and ptr records for the server in DNS. They need to exist for both joining the domain and name resolution of the servers name.

I can ping the Server name, i type ping "name" and it will resolve an ip for me. However i can STILL not join the domain. I am confused, i have reformatted, reinstalled everything like 3 times.

Figured it out. I have DSL modem hooked up to a Linksis router. I have to somehow bridge the modem to my router, so i have the correct DNS information, and set my 2003 server as a DHCP and a DNS server.

sype: i don't follow. are you saying that you solved your problem by 'bridging' the modem and the router? i don't understand how you can "bridge" them, nor how the modem would influence your problem.

Well, this is what happens. I have a dsl modem and a linksys router. The modem bridges the router. So when i use the DNS server it is for the Router, not my ISP's DNS server. So i have to TELNET into my modem, and set it up as a bridged modem. I have yet to do it, but that is what i will be doing shortly.

so, well i have remoted into my modem, and when i set it to bridged mode, i have no idea what to do after that. I am going to call my isp to see if they will help me. Ill keep you guys informed.
