I'm running Microsoft Server 2003 on a small network. I'm using DSL with a wireless router. Do I need to install a DNS and DHCP server since my ISP will handle DNS and the router will handle DHCP?

Thanks!

Angel

If you are having yourdomain.com DNS'd to your external IP address, you can use the wireless router to 'share' the connection among all of your computers and then redirect WAN requests to the Server.

For the Server, you should give it a NON DHCP IP address internally (192.168.1.201) for example. THEN...you should set either DMZ for the (192...201) address or set Port Forwarding to the (192...201) address. Forward blocks or individual ports, i.e. 80 for WWW, 21 for FTP, etc.

Hope this helps.

Thanks Chris for your RAPID response! But to be clear... Do I need to install a DNS and DHCP server on my server which is running Windows 2003 Server?

Thanks!

If you use your router for DHCP, no, you won't have to install it on the server. However, if you're going to run an Active Directory domain on the 2003 server, DNS is required. If you're just running it as a standalone server, then you won't have to setup DNS on it and you can leave the DNS info as being assigned to the clients by the router.

Yeah, what he said! LoL!

DNS and DHCP are two entirely different things.

1 - Your router will get configured with DHCP from you ISP; it will receive an IP address, a Gateway and a few DNS server addresses.

2 - Your router will supply all internal PCs with an IP address, a Gateway (itself) and the DNS server addresses that it received from your ISP, the router will be a DHCP server, so no need to install on Win2003.

3 - While the router is handling your internal DHCP, the ISP will be giving you some DNS servers to use, so you won't need to install a DNS server either.

So, DHCP will save you a lot of work configuring the PCs, and you don't need a DNS server since your ISP will let you use theirs.

Is that more to the point?

It just depends if you really need it or not, to me its worth enable DHCP and DNS on my server. First, I would have total control of it and dont' have to depend on my ISP. Secondly, it helps to share the load with my router, since the router is small devices is least amount of memory, i wouldn't utilize it unless i need it. Also, by have DHCP you can enable which part of network or clients to have static or automatically assigned IP. You can also have privilege to configure your Host A configuration!
