I am having problems with users getting to my email server. I have run the Exchange best practices anaylzer and it shows that it cannot contact the schema master or the domain naming master. I have gone into AD on the other DC and changed it from the server that had the problem to the server that is working but I am still getting access denied when I try to replicate from the email server (which also happens to be a DC, yes I know bad). The only way I can replicate is if I reboot the email server. I am at my wits end. I don't know if I should demote the server and repromote it or if that will cause a problem with email or what?

How many DC`s are in your domain? Which one holds all the FSMO roles? How many are designated as Global catalog's? Also what is the binding order of the network cards on the DC`s. Are they multi homed? Do they contain more than 1 nic? Are they on the same subnet?

Two DC's, there is only on GC and the some of the FSMO roles are held by the Exchange server/DC but when I try to switch those roles to the GC/DC they initially succeed then fail. No multi-homed nics and everything is on the same subnet.

There failing because Exchange is bound to the FSMO roles on that local DC. Ironically exchange on a domain controller is NOT a best practice scenario.Note DO NOT demote the server. This would be disatrous and would result in you having to rebuild the DC and possibly exchange. Its certainly not a scenario supported by MS. Install the support tools from the 2003 CD and run a netdiag and Dcdiag to see the health of your topology and DC. Check the event viewer and see if there are any replication errors there. Furthermore what is the binding order on your DC?
