okay, this gets a little tricky...

I have a workstation running Windows Server 2003. this workstation is configured with 2 NIC's, 1 is connected to a self contained network with no outside access. the other NIC is connected to a network that has outside (internet) access. the NIC that is connected to the internal network is assigned an IP and a subnet and nothing else. the NIC that is connected to the network with interenet access has been assigned an IP, subnet, Gateway, and DNS servers. from this computer i can resolve external sites (ie www.google.com) but i can not resolve internal names (ie servers on the same network) now i can ping these servers by IP and i can ping them using their FQDN but can not ping them by computer name alone.

it seems like when i try to ping a server name it is trying to use the NIC that is connected to the internal network instead of the NIC that is connected to the network that has external access. any thoughts on this would be great. thanks.

Why does this surprise you?
How is an external DNS server ever going to know about your local pcs? You can not write to an external DNS server.

This is why MS has an internal dns server that you put the isps dns in the forwarders tab. It can be written to so it knows about the internal names/ips. What it doesn't know [like google.com] it redirected to what is listed in the forwarders tab to then be resolved.

You might want to review technet docs on RRAS which is how you setup routing between the server nics. Along with the DNS docs you should be good to go.

Imagine the power if you knew how to internet search

when i meant external DNS i meant the one on the other network that the one card is configured to access, not external as in external to the network, my fault on that for not explaning it correctly.

so let me try this a little better.
we have 2 networks we will call them network 1 and network 2. network 1 has access to the internet, network 2 does not.

my workstation resides on network 2 but has a second NIC that connects to network 1. so when i attempt to go to the internet from this workstation it uses the NIC connected to network 1 and it resolves everything fine. however if i try to ping another computer on network 1 it fails giving me the generic can not resolve this host name. but if i ping the server via IP or FQDN it works fine. so it appears that i can resolve external addresses but not internal addresses on network 1. i hope this makes a little more sense.

How are you handling internal name resolution? ie network1 Do you have a network1 dns server?

there is a DNS server running on network 1. and from network 1 i can ping other servers on network 1. however network 1 is unaware of network 2. i don't think this should matter since as far as network 1 should be concerned the workstation in question is part of network 1.

WINS needs to be setup for name resolution on network 2. The station with two NICs will be the gateway between both sides so technically is on both networks.
