There is no dns name shown under the 'Computer Properties' in active directory for a computer on a domain using Windows Server 2003. The client computer can get out to the internet, can recieve e-mail, can see all the computers on the network. The Server can ping the ip address of the client computer but cannot access the computer. The dns name under the properties for the 'Computer Properties' window shows no name. I need to be able to access the client computer from the Server in order to be able to back it up onto a tape back-up. Any ideas?

DNS name? Don't you mean host name like the name of the computer?

Did you join this computer to the domain?
Does a host and ptr entry exist for this host?

When right-click on the Computer propoerties in the Active Directory and check the General tab, no name is shown under the DNS name and it is greyed out. I joined the computer to the domain, but when I try to access it from the Server. I get the following error message:

\\***** is not accessible. You might not have permission to use this network resource. Contact the administrator of this server to find out if you have access permissions. There are currently no logon serbvers available to service the request.

As mentioned before, the coimputer has access to printers, internet, e-mail, and all computers on the domain. The Server is the one I need to get access to the computer.

I'm oory to say, I don't know what you mean when you ask about the host or ptr entry.

Doesn't sound like you have configured dhcp [assuming you are running dhcp from the server] to dynamically update DNS.

Host and ptr records are in DNS. You need to open up the ms dns server console and add that machine to dns. This will create the host and ptr [reverse lookup] records.

Please forgive my ignorance, but you are speaking of things I do not know. Can you give me a little more explanation. There are 12 other computers on this domain with no problems whatsoever. It just seems to be the computer that I tried to add to the domain. All the other computers have a dns name under the 'General' tab of the computer properties in the Active Directory.

So, when you right-click My Computer (on the problem machine) and select Properties, Computer Name, what is the Full computer name? Does the Domain show as your domain?
