Can i have a dns server and host a webpage
on the same server (iis)?the problem arose when i tried to join a cleint to a d.c.( istalled with ad. and dns) it gave me dc_srv error.
i wanted to reinstall the dc with dns.
so i did some research on installing dns and in the article it stated before i installed dns, i needed to configure tcp/ip : where the ip address and the preffered dns server ip were the same.i have tcpip with the preffered and secondary dns as the ip address of my isp.
here i am very confused because if i do not configure the tcpip with my isp how will i have access to the internet and then
how can dns server and iis exixt on same machine?
thanks,

In order to promote a server to DC status, one has to either:
A) have DNS preconfigured on the server
or
B) Configure DNS during the promotion process (this is the better method)
What they mean when they say "before i installed dns, i needed to configure tcp/ip : where the ip address and the preffered dns server ip were the same.
" they're referring to the server's TCP/IP information.Say for example your DC has the following TCP/IP settings:
Address: 192.168.0.1
Subnet Mask: 255.255.255.0
Gateway: IP address of your router
DNS: 192.168.0.1Once you promote the server to DC status and allow it to configure the DNS during the promotion, when you're finished, your server will look to itself for DNS resolution. You then have to go into the DNS, go on the "forwarding" tab and forward your DNS to your provider's DNS address.
Once done correctly, all local requests (ie: inside the local domain) are handled by your DC's DNS. If a request is outside the local zone, your DNS server then forwards this to your provider's DNS for resolution.
how can dns server and iis exixt on same machine?
Quite simply and easily. Once you have your DC, and it's DNS, properly configured (this being the key point), then you install IIS and proceed with creating your web site or whatever.

mister curt r,
thank you so much for taking the time to answer my question. thanks also for putting it in terms that can be easily understood.
i just about to install the dc from scratch again.one thing about the naming of a dns, should it be different from my web site?
for instance website is named website.com.
can i name the dns website.local ?

You should not host a web page on a Domain Controller.
Your DC and its network should not be exposed to the internet the way a web page is or the server it runs on. It should be in a DMZ seperate from your internal network.
You are asking to be hacked with this setup. Hopefully your network contains no financial information.
Concerning your last question; you are confusing internal dns with external dns. Website.com has to have a public dns entry on the web. This is done at your ISP's dns server(s). Just like the website domain name needs to be registered with internic. Your dns server isn't on the internet as a dns server. You should have your own name space like mynetwork.local for your local network. You may want to do some research on split brain dns.
