I am a student of programming, I am currently trying to understand the active directory server role and dns. From What I know, dns controls all the domain mapping records ( like a,ns...etc), but what about active directory? what is it really used for? Is it only used for internal company usage in the real world, and do those sharehosting companies offerring windows sharehosting also use active directory to manage websites? If you can help, I am greatly appreciated.

It's too complicated to explain in a post but if you search Google for:

active directory tutorial

You'll find all you need.
