Hi,

I have a Domain Controller which is also a DNS server for my domain. My clients are connected to DC with DHCP server which is on another Domain (DHCP Server). I have configured Reverse Lookup Zone for my Domain. But the clients with DHCP IPs are not making entries to reverse zone even after ipconfig /flushdns ipconfig /registerdns. I have checked the settings on DHCP server and DNS server. Both have the setting of Dynamic updates enabled. Also to add the clients with Static IP when done ipconfig /flushdns ipconfig /registerdns make their entries in Reverse Lookup Zone. Why my Cleints on DHCP not making Entries Reverse Lookup zone?

Thanks & Regards,
Milind Gujar

What, are we talking DHCP or DNS because they are two different things and work at two different layers. If it is a DNS issue then yes the DNSFlush should have fixed it. But is it is a DHCP then you need to deal with the ARP and RARP tables.

What is the problem and we might work backwords from there.

Is it that you can only see your Clients by their IPs and not by their FQDN? (i.e. //10.10.10.10/shared instead of //mycomputer/shared?

What is their DNS pointed to in the IPCONFIG /ALL?

Do you have an internal Firewall between the clients and the server?

If you could answer some of these questions then we might be able to pin point it.

milind2517 is talking about dhcp dynamically updating ms dns. The question pertains to if dhcp is updating the host record why is it not updating/creating a ptr record.

milind2517 did you do this?
To configure a DHCP server to register and to update client information with its configured DNS servers, follow these steps:
Open the DHCP properties for the server
Click DNS, click Properties, click to select the Enable DNS dynamic updates according to the settings below check box, and then click Always dynamically update DNS A and PTR records.

wanderer You have figured my problem right.
And my settings are also as u mentioned.
When i give Static IP to cleints its makes the PTR entry in DNS but DHCP clients do make PTR entries. :(
