Hi,
I was wondering if anyone could tell me if I'm doing things correctly.
I have come to understand, after reading Microsoft's DFS documentation, that DFS is like a map to distributed files on a domain with the capability of replicating data to lessen the network load and make files available offline. Please correct me if i'm mistaken to avoid misleading someone else.
So I decided to install DFS. I have the intention of only using it as a "map" for the moment (I still haven't understood the replication bit quite well). I have created a namespace, added folders and folder targets. But when i try to access the folders I only get one of the folder targets contents in display.
e.g. namespace: DFS (domain based)
folders: docs, media, warez
** in folder 'warez' for example, i have 3 other folder (drivers, apps, multimedia) and in the 'apps' folder i have 3 folder targets.**say i go to a workstation on the domain and access the root folder in search of an application. i go to root folder --> warez --> apps but the file i'm looking for is not displayed. only one of the target folder's contents are displayed. the other folders and its contents are not displayed.
futhermore, a curious thing happens, if i access the folder with the application i'm looking for through the network neighborhood and then return to the DFS 'warez --> apps' folder, i can now see the files of the folder i have just visited!, and yet not the others.
what am i doing wrong? can anyone please help me out. thank you.

DFS isn't for replication. It's so that you can take resources from various servers, and instead of having your user go to ServerX for one thing and then go to ServerY for another, and then to ServerZ for something else, you can provide them with a logical structure.
It also allows you to shift data from server to server and point the DFS link to the new location. Since people use the DFS pathway and not the UNC, then your users don't have a thing to worry about.
So.. DFSpath\Folder1\Folder2\MyFolder and DFSpath\Folder1\Folder3\MyOtherFolder can actually live on two separate servers. But as an end user all I have to do is map a drive to DFSpath\Folder1 and I can get to both servers without doing anything further (assuming the security rights are set correctly).
So I don't think it will do quite what it sounds like you want it to (if I understood your post correctly)...
