Hi

I have read about DFS, how it can be useful in 2003 domain, software deployment by creating a dfs root and linking it so the path will not change if your server have run out of HD space. It also does replication to another server on the same domain.

Is it useful if I do this for my users as each have a shared mapped drive on the server for their documents, will all their shared files be replicated to another server, so if one server HD fails. I have an exact copies of their documents.

Is this how it works?

Thanks

Ken

Sure. If you add multiple targets to one share, and allow it to replicate, then if one server goes down users will be transparently redirected to the other server. In that respect, it's very useful, although it may just be me but I'm just not comfortable with using the same technology that replicated the SYSVOL share for fileshares. My friend had a bad experience with DFS throwing a wobbly and deleting his SYSVOL folder. Oh Dear!

Anyway, it SHOULD be OK, and if it works, can provide excellent failover for your network.

Thanks Rob.

I am not sure how it really works but is it instant replication, like say 2 HD mirrored, so they user won't get his previous documents.

I hope shadow copy will still function if I do this.

It's not THAT instant, but its pretty quick. It depends on the size of the files being replicated, obviously, but if you add a small file then it will be replicated within something like 10 seconds normally.

Hope this helps,

Rob
