Subject: Dell Dimension 8100 Exchange ServerOS: Windows XPCPU/Ram: P4 3.0 1024 MBModel/Manufacturer: ASUS P4P800 |
Comment: Hello, I have a Dell Dimension 8100 System. Now, I am planning to make it into an Exchange Server with Windows 2000 or 2003 Server on it. The Processor speed is a Pentium 4 1.5 GHz and the amount of memory is 512 MB of memory. Is it recommended to make this an exchange server or must I get a better computer than that. Must I install Windows Server 2003 Enterprise Edition with Exchange Server 2003 Enterprise Edition or will it be better if I can install Windows 2000 Advanced Server with Exchange Server 2003 Enterprise Edition.

Reply: (edit)I hope this isn't for production use... Server class hardware exists for a reason. FYI, 512M of RAM for an Exchange server is paltry. "Enough, enough bowing down to disillusion! Hats off & applause to rogues & evolution! The ripple effect is too good not to mention. If you’re not affected, you’re not paying attention!"

Reply: (edit)unfortunatly no... you'll barely get it up and running with that... trust me... i had a phase over exchange 2003 at college... we had to use old dell workstations with 256M of ram... i couldn't do anything... literally...

Reply: (edit)I have exchange running on my production (home) envirnment running on a dual P3 500, 1gb ram (poweredge 4300 server) works just fine for my limited use. I would not make this a corp server but more then enough to test on.
