Hay all.

How would I remove/delete the dns and dhcp from a Win 2003 server for small business. I want to add it back to the router.

Michael

Are you running active directory or just as a standalone server? Both services cost little to no overhead for the server. So why would you want to do this?

Yeah, was about to say getting rid of DNS would be incredibly bad. ;-)

I am running Active Directory.

I have a problem were the computers in my office will drop off the network. The fix seems to be to reboot the server. I was thinking that it was a DNS problem. I checked the event log's they do have DNS errors but not on the day's that the network is dumping out. I was going to move the DNS and DHCP to the Router to see if that fixes the problem.

Plus I hate the fact that if the server were to crash it would kick everyone off the internet for a period of time. It seems like these should be on the Netopia router firewall.

DHCP and DNS on the server is not causing this problem. If you try to move DNS in particular, you will blow Active Directory up.

I would suggest you run netdiag and dcdiag on the server and see what's failing.

Also, what are the DNS failures you're seeing in the logs?

What do you mean "workstation drops off the network"?
when it is "off" can you ping it by ip?
can you ping it by name?

"I hate the fact that if the server were to crash it would kick everyone off the internet for a period of time"

This is why you build fault tolerance into your system with two servers. Both have the GC and DNS. Then if one goes down you still have internet and network authenication.
