Hello,

When I boot my Windows server 2003, I get this message C:\windows\system32\config\system file is missing or corrupt. Try using Last Known Good Configuration or try using the Recovery Console by hitting r on the Windows setup screen.
First of all I cannot use the Last Known Good Configuration screen because the system does not even get to boot that far. Does anyone know how to repair this using the Recovery Console screen? I have insructions that I got from Microsoft but they are for XP and they are not working right for me. Anyone have instructions on how to fix it with 2003?

Any help would be appreciated. Thanks.

John

Hey. I struggled with this in Win2000 for about 3 hours today and finally hit a solution. While it isn't Win2003, it is NT based so it most likely will work for you.

From the recovery options screen, hit C to use the recovery console (sounds like you've done this, just making sure). Go to winnt/system32/config and rename system to something else [ ren system sysold ]. Then make a new dir named system [ mkdir system ]. Why did this work? I don't know. I came across your message trying to figure out just what this system directory is, and what was in it before I renamed it.

Good luck.
