Ok, lets see how simple I can make this..

I am running windows server 2003 (fresh install about 3 weeks ago) /w all updates from windows

Right now there is only one user.. Me (administrator)

I am hosting my web site on this server, thus I needed to install the IIS package which I did with no problem.

I went to my computer -> manage -> IIS up my directory etc, and now I should have my website ’installed’

Now here’s the problem..

When somebody comes to my website they can only get pictures (jpg) and the html code. *nothing else*
In other words, I have //arcadeia/photo/arcadeia.jpg they can view that picture fine with out no problems.
But change the SAME file name’s extension to arcadeia.jpg1 (so then they would have to download it) and try and direct link to it, I get what looks like a different version of the normal windows 404 error, but it says:

The page cannot be found

Please try the following:
Make sure that the Web site address displayed in the address bar of your browser is spelled and formatted correctly.
If you reached this page by clicking a link, contact the Web site administrator to alert them that the link is incorrectly formatted.
Click the Back button to try another link.
HTTP Error 404 - File or directory not found.
Internet Information Services (IIS)

Technical Information (for support personnel)
Go to Microsoft Product Support Services and perform a title search for the words HTTP and 404.
Open IIS Help, which is accessible in IIS Manager (inetmgr), and search for topics titled Web Site Setup, Common Administrative Tasks, and About Custom Error Messages.

I thought maybe I did have it wrong so went to my computer -> manage -> IIS and my website and I activated NCSA Common Logfile.

I got somebody off my lan to direct link to the arcadeia.jpg1 and the same problem is happing, but they can get the arcadeia.jpg file. So went back the log files and sure enough it says:

[Ip of guy off the lan] - - [22/Jun/2005:10:21:07 -0700] "GET /photo/arcadeia.jpg1 HTTP/1.1" 404

But right beneath it is says

[ip if guy off the lan] - - [22/Jun/2005:10:21:09 -0700] "GET /photo/arcadeia.jpg HTTP/1.1" 200 9477

The first one at the end says 404. Which means my guy off my lan got a 404 error In his web browser. While the second ends with 200, thus completing the action of the “GET“ command and delivering the 9477 image size picture to the guy off my lans’ web browser.

Now, the path mentioned in the log file and where the files actually are on the server *is the exact same path* There is nothing wrong with this picture expect that people can’t download from my site other then pictures and html code.

So now I’m really frustrated and go to the server console itself and type in the webbowrser:

http://192.168.111.15/arcadeia/photo/arcadeia.jpg1

And * I * get same the 404 error -- ON THE CONLSOE.

Thinking that there is an error on my network, I go to random win XP box and setup IIS on that - the same way I did on the 2003 server.

Then I go to the web bower (on the WIN XP box) and type in http://192.168.111.68/arcadeia/photo/arcadeia.jpg1 and it work like a charm, like it’s suppose to.. No problem. The box came up asking me where I wanted to download it etc. Just to be sure I did the download to make sure everything was working -- it was.

Baffled by this… strange way of things, I then go back to the serve console and type in the address of the WIN XP box I made IIS. The box pops up on the server ready for download.

THEN …. I type in the server’s address 192.168.111.15/arcadeia/photo/arcadeia.jpg1 and I’m faced with the same 404 error I mentioned about in this post.

Do I have a corrupted IIS install, is there any way to ix this? Pleas advise!!

Thanks!!
