I am having trouble setting up a VPN on Server 2003, The Clients have all been working on Server 2000, but now that I have the new software up and running in the office with no problem, the VPN Client cannot get past the login.

While PCAnywhere does work to the server remotely, and I can see the access lights on the network connection trying to indicate that the remotes is trying to connect, They get no connection.

Using a linksys BEFW11S4 router and DSL, before the Server, and The server has only one NIC card, so I had to use the custom wizard.

I did forward TCP 1723 port
Any Hints?

I am having the same problems. I am also using Server 2003 RAS with one NIC for VPN. I can connect to Server 2000 and NT with my WXP Pro client going through the same Linksys routers. However with Server 2003 the connection stops at "Veryfing User Name and Password". After timming out I get a message error 721 "remote computer did not respond."

Can anyone out there help us?

Thanks
Shel

First thing i need to ask is " are you trying to test the vpn locally as in from you local network are you trying to connect to the externel ip of you router if so this will not work, to test it you will need to dial up on a modem to an isp or use a different broadband connection.

Secondly have you got VPN passthrew support on those routers you are using, most new routers have VPN passthrew support, although if you are using pptp vpns then you need to just port forward pptp port to the local ip of the vpn net card assuming you are using NAT.

Secondly i have found that sometimes it is better to configure VPN server manually than through the wizard as the wizard can sometimes mess things up.

Hope this may help.

Here is a more detailed scenario about VPN with Windows 2003 which all forums dicussing this issue do not explain.

If you have a router connected to your ISP cable modem or DSL why would you need two NIC cards. Router is NIC #1 and the VPN server NIC #2. If the router supporst VPN PPTP pass-through then there is nothing really to configure in the router except port 1723 (dlink 614+).

Scenerio:
Windows 2003 server with one NIC card behind the router. Configured with RAS, IAS, active directory, DNS and DHCP relayed to my router because it is the DHCP server. Also created a shared security key for certificates. When you enable RAS, the wizard starts but since I only have one NIC card it tells me that i have to create a custom VPN connection (wizard stops). The user account in the domain is set to Allow VPN connections.

When i try to connect to the VPN server from the outside i get this:
Connecting to 123.34.45.234 (not actual IP) and then it goes to Verifying Username and Password. That to me would mean that it did pass-through the router and is now trying to authenticate to the VPN server. Then i get the ERROR 721: The remote computer did not respond. Here come the questions:
Does the connecting computer have to be a part of the same domain?

I ask this because when you create a client connection in RAS it asks for the DNS name of the computer connecting.

What am I missing. I did everything on the microsoft website tutorial for VPN setup except the part with two NIC's. I want to use my router not straight to one card and out the other.

Any ideas?
