December 28, 2012 at 06:14:41
Specs: small business server 2003, 2.2 / 8gb

About once a month, companyweb will quit working. trying to check our email from outside the company also quits. only way to fix the problem is to reboot the server. I have gone into services and restarted a lot of them, any i thought had to do with my problem.
companyweb say's it's running in AD. i can stop it and restart it, no fix.. no errors in event log.. at a loss

Does it happen at the same time every day or when anti virus or a backup is running?

i've started a log of the servers, i have specific dates..
10-18-2012
11-09-2012
12-05-2012
12-28-2012

there does seem to be, on each of these dates, windows update failed..
today I went in and turned automatic updates off.

Good thinking. See what happens now that updates are disabled.

Updates have nothing to do with the issue. What are the messages BEFORE the update failure? The update failure indicates a connection failure so its a result not the originator of the problem.

Next time before you reboot the server do the following;

nslookup yourdomainname
tracert yourdomainname.
nslookup yahoo.com
tracert yahoo.com

Post the results of these commands for review and further troubleshooting suggestions.

You would want to do these commands from the server when its not reachable and from the outside. Between the two it should be evident where the break in communication is.

I was trying to check my exchange email from outside the company, that's when i first learned of the problem. I was able to do a remote desktop into the server. that server also has a security monitor server running, i was able to log into it as well and see the cameras. while in remote desktop, i was able to ping COMPANYWEB and it gave a reply. that was all i tried to ping. i went into ad and stopped COMPANYWEB and restarted it. i also went into services and restarted a lot of things, including sql stuff. nothing seemed to help the situation. i will do as you suggested the next time it happens..

sunday, march 31st my phone quit getting email from our server. i did a remote login and sure enough, all those services had stopped. i tried restarting them along with sharepoint but no dice. went ahead and did a server reboot so that when i came in monday morning everything would be running fine. Came in and all was well, just that same old problem. something is making those services stop. the very first error in the logs is update failed. I'm out of ideas, guess i'll just be rebooting the server every 28 days.

Have you reviewed your modem/router logs for a disconnect?

Services don't fail without a error being posted. You should also review your auditing settings and make sure you have no event viewer filters engaged.
