Hi to all.
I'm having this problem.
I have a clean install of the 2003 Server, no hardware and no software installed. Just windows. I reinstalled windows because of this same problem. The system alone start's loading net.exe and cmd.exe to memory. And it loads so many times that the system eventually runs out of free RAM and crashes.
This usually happens when i'm running internet apps such as IRC or games but it doesnt happen with IE.
What can i do????

I'm having the same problem. I was keeping my task window open and deleting the cmd.exe file every time it poped up... then I ran Norton WinDoctor, but it says there are no problems... yea, right!... frustrated I just dragged the cmd.exe file into the Recycle Bin and currently running windows without it.
Currently I have a Windows File Protection Message staring me in the face letting me know this is a big no no. So I'm back to square one. What to do, what to do...???

I'm either brave, or not to bright... you make the call.

I ran a search on my Windows 2000 installation CD and couldn't find either a cmd.exe or net.exe file on it. So I surmised that maybe I don't really need them to operate Windows?

So I ran a search on my C drive and found one net.exe file which I dragged to the Recylce Bin and 3 cmd.exe files which I also dragged to the Recycle Bin. So far so good. I'll let you know if anything crashes...!!!

Me too. I wonder if it is some virus or something? I run the Cumputer Associates virus software, and it also claims I am clean I don't believe it though.

cmd.exe
typ it in "start" "run" then it opens an dos shell in that un can typ dos commands.
e.g. ipconfig /all
that will show u ure ip, mac, gateway and so on.
the net.exe command u can typ in the dosshell then u will get informations how to use it.
i did not use the net.exe jet, but i often use the dos shell.

no fear the doshell is not the hell

It took me 2 hours to scan the virus last night for the same problem.
Frustrated!!! No any virus at all!!!
I tried the following steps to fix that annoyed problem:

1. rename the cmd.exe to any name you want (not delete); Because the system would automatically recover the cmd.exe right after your delete.

2. rename the xcopy.exe to cmd.exe.
of couse you should use the copy the xcopy.exe file under the same folder. this step MUST be finished very quick, otherwise the system will recover the cmd.exe before you make this, which would lead to a error message.

3. redirect the short cut in the desktop which is originally pointed to the genuine cmd.exe to the renamed one.

That is what i did yesterday.
My system working well now.

But still can't understand what is the real reason. Any one can explain would be greatful for us!!!!!

I have followed your instructions up to point 2. At point 3 I do not understand exactly what to do:
. I have no shortcut on my desktop originally pointed to the genuine cmd.exe
2. what is the renamed one? the dummy one I used initially in point 1 to rename cmd.exe? or the cmd.exe which was xcopy.exe renamed as cmd.exe in point 2?
3. I am stuck at point 3. If you could help me I would greatly appreciate it
Thank you for your help. Claude.

I would say go with AngrieWoman's post and remove the virus. But if for some reason that's a problem for you, try writing a VBscript that checks for cmd.exe in your task manager, and automatically deletes it, say every 5 seconds or so. That should do it. You'd lose the ability to use cmd yourself, but some of you seem to not care at this point.

Also, when reading AngrieWoman's link, I noticed how the worm gets in. Why don't you guys try putting a password on your systems? That'd probably help on those nasty virus'.

Err... I'm not sure if my problem is the same as all of yours... Everytime I'm on my computer a DOS Prompt Window pops up and the title of the program is... Dun-dun-dun... cmd.exe... It wasn't that bad at first because I could just 'x' out of the program and it would be fine... But now I closes itself down and reopens constantly... Over and Over! Gah! Kill it! No virus programs can remove it either... Geesh... My lucky month... First I get the Blaster Virus and now this! Please... Someone help!
