Comment:

New setup w/ SBS 2003 Stnd and 5 local clients (all have XP Pro. SBS 2003 preinstalled and finished setup w/o problem.

After running To DO list item for adding users and computers went to 1st client and tried to use the IE browser to join domain. Error that domain couldn't be found or unaccessible. This occurred on all clients.

Network is as follows:

-Cable modem/router combo using router as DHCP w/ 1 CAT5 cable connecting the modem/router to unmanaged switch. Each of the PCs (including SBS server) occupy a port on the switch.

-Router has IP 10.1.10.1
-IP pool is 10.1.10.2 - 10.1.10.199 (excluding 10.1.10.2 for static IP of server)

All PC (including server) are able to connect to internet
-Server TCP/IP properties show static IP 10.1.10.2 and Primary and Alt DNS is blank but message from Windows says "DNS Server is empty. The local IP address will be configured as the primary DNS server address Becuz it is installed on this machine".
When the Wizard didn't work to get the computers to join domain, I tried to do it manually on each client.

TCP/IP properties are:

-Obtain IP automatically
- Use following DNS server addresses w/ 10.1.10.2 in Primary DNS server and nothing in Alternated DNS server.

I don't care whether DHCP is from router or SBS, I just want it to work.

One more thing...I am able to PING any and all from any PC

Thank you in advance for any help here.

Ok, if you're pinging ok then you have connectivity. To join your XP clients to the domain do the following:

1) Open System Properties and click on Computer Name tab and then click the Change button
2) In the Computer Name Changes window click on the More button
3) Put your DNS suffix into the "Primary DNS suffix" entry field then click OK
4) On the computer name changes window again now click the Domain radio button and put your domain name in there.
5) Reboot system and log onto the domain (domain pulldown on login window and select your domain). When prompted, use credentials that allow you to join a PC to the domain (ie: administrator)

One other thing to note. Your server should be set up as the domain's DNS server with forwarding enabled to your ISP's DNS server(s) to handle requests outside the local zone. All clients must also point at your DNS server in order to join properly.

You may actually have to switch to having your server provide DHCP in order to give clients the IP address of your server as the DNS server for the domain.
