Greetings: earlier postings indicate others have had the problem I'm experiencing which is the client gets kicked off the SBS 2003 server; reboot of client machine is necessary to regain access to shared server files. I've also experienced a loss of access to the network printer until I reboot the client machine.
a server login screen says that "a domain controller cannot be found to verify that user name"
postings did not provide a resolution; Can someone please help me?
thanks
mbb

I followed the articles instructions to have my client machine be part of the workgroup WORKGROUP and rebooted my machine.
accessing the shared folders on the server is waaay faster than it was previously.
when I went to do the 2nd step which was to add the client machine back in to the domain I got this error message:
A domain controller for the domain 'x'
could not be contacted. troubleshooting info indicated the following error occurred when DNS was queired for the service location (SRV resource record used to locate a domain controller for domain 'x':the error was: "DNS name does not exist"
when executing the view workgroup computers i see a bunch of several other machines in the executive suite and not my server.
When I view the LAN connections on the client machine for TCP/IP the DNS entry correctly points to the ip of my server.
any ideas why the server doesn't recognize the only domain in its active directory?
thanks for your help -

check your dns entries on your dns server and make sure that the right machine/ip is in there. flush the dns cache on the workstation. can you ping the server from the workstation? can you ping the default gateway?
also, check out this article:http://support.microsoft.com/default.aspx?scid=kb;en-us;331072
good luck

thanks for the pointer to 331072. The dns entry in the tcp/ip for the LAN connection on the client machine is set to the server ip address and the alternate dns entry is set to what the preferred DNS server entry is on the server.
isn't that how i configure to use a dns server?

I went thru the configure the DNS server again and noticed it was only listening for a bogus IP address. when that was cleared I was able to add my machine to the domain.local. I have very fast access time to for all shared files. So 1. joining the workgroup WORKGROUP and rebooting followed by rejoining the domain and rebooting allows me to quickly access all shared files and it appears the server is no longer logging me off.
thanks - it works!!
