Hi there...

I have a server 2003 with 2 NIC. Nic 1 connect to internet from another server with automatic IP. NIC 2 connect to switch which attach to client machines. My problem is how to make the client have the internet access.

This what ive been done

NIC 1 (automatic IP)
Ip add : 192.168.17.196
Gateway : 192.168.16.21
DNS : 202.188.1.5
202.188.0.133

NIC 2 (manual IP)
Ip add : 192.101.0.1
Gateway : 192.168.17.196
DNS : 202.188.1.5
202.188.0.133

I've already set the DHCP at the server with IP range 192.101.0.2-21, gateway - 192.101.0.1 and DNS - 202.188.0.133

I tried Internet Connection Sharing (ICS) at NIC 2 but it didn't work. I also have blank the NIC 2 gateway but it cannot work.

So please tell how to solve it. I'm newbie in server so please tell me step by step.

Thank you

ayim

Only one of the two NIC's can have a gateway address.

If this server is acting a router for your clients to get to the internet then the NIC2 will have no gateway address. The clients will set their gateway to NIC2's IP address. The NIC1 will have a static ip address and a gateway address from the network that connects to the internet.

Here is how it should look
2003 Server
NIC 1 - one that connects to the internet router
192.168.0.2 static IP
255.255.0.0 subnet mask
192.168.0.1 gateway

NIC 2 - clients gateway to internet
192.101.0.1 - static ip
255.255.0.0 subnet mask
No gateway

Clients - DHCP address in the 192.101.0.2-21 range, subnet mask 255.255.0.0 and a gateway of 192.101.0.1

I don't agree with Cleo's opinion, you need to have both the gateway addresses & those are correct.

Your problem is you are using Class B IP address in which first two octet firms Network portion of the IP address so 192.168.0.X & 192.101.0.X are two different subnets, either you need enable packet forwarding on NIC2 if both NICs are on different Network Gear or you need change IP of NIC2 if they are on same Network Gear.

Please answer following questions in order for me to be more specific to resolve the problem.

NIC1 & NIC2 are they going to same switch or different switches?
What is the server which is connected to NIC1?
Be very specific about the network design.

Jigan

Here is link to microsoft article that states that only one NIC should have a gateway address in a multihomed server. Server 2003 will kick up a fuss if you try to set both NIC's with a gateway address.
