I purchased a portable hd for backup the server's data. When I plug-in the hd into the servr, it's recognized as a "massive storage device" immediately but the server won't assign a driver letter to the hd. If I manually assign a driver letter to the hd, I still can't use the hd. I tried to reboot the server while the hd is still plug-in into the server, but not working.
I can see the small green arrow on the system tray. When I left click on it, it jut displays "massive storage device". However, if I plug-in a flash usb drive into the server, the drive works normally. If I use the portable hd on my NB, it just works fine.

I see no mention of using disk manager to write a signature to the drive or of partitioning and formatting the drive.

I can't do partition or format on the drive because I already store some other data in it. I'm not sure if this info matters, but the portable hd is 160GB and it is built with one partition and format by Windows XP with NTFS file system.
I guess I can move the data onto other PCs try to format it on the sever (why didn't I think of this). I will post the result here after I do it.
