I have a small server with 3 users. Suddenly, the users cant see their mapped drives or use the print services. They cant see the server at all, or anything on the domain including each other. Server hosts a small website, no exchange or remote access. That's it.
Could this be a virus? I cant find much in the way of security issues. And why would it just stop? I did apply a couple of automatic updates, but I tried uninstalling them. No effect. This would suck if I had to reinstall the whole server. Can anyone help?

DO you have anti-virus software installed?
After checking for viruses, start by checking IP numbers on all machines, and try to ping between machines. If IP /submasks are correct and you can't ping try changing hubs/switch.
Peter

Thanks for your response. I didn't have virus software installed when the problem was first discovered. I immediately put on a copy of Norton 8.1 enterprise, got virus updates, and then scanned the server. No viruses found.
I can ping between machines. They can all see the internet. The netgear router does DHCP. The just can see anything on the domain, especially the server.

Hi,
Can ping but can't 'see'? Do you mean can't browse?
Can you ping another workstation/server by name?
Is your server running RRAS?
Have you changed/added services (such as RRAS) recently?
Can the workstations ping the server by IP?
Peter

I can ping workstations and they can ping the server. Everybody can browse the internet. But the Windows domain or domain controller (called "KIRK") cannot be browsed. (Sorry if Im not using exactly the right term).
IOW, in the windows explorer, you can select "Microsoft Windows Network" and see a container called "KIRK", but selecting that gives a message that I dont have permission to see it. It should show the server and three PCs.
I tried to install the FTP server, and I applied a few Windows Security updates. When this problem arose, I uninstalled FTP server and rolled back the updates - to no effect.
I am very thankful for any advise.

Hi,
You are welcome, and sorry for the delay in getting back to you - I've been too busy to log here.
OK- the problem is not the updates. If you can ping by IP but not by name the first place to look is DNS.
What is your server name, and what is the domain name (is it a domain or workstation?) If both are 'Kirk' then that is likely the problem.
Is the server running DNS service?
Peter
